Hey Young World,

This is the August 2024 edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.

We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.

2004 ‘til Infinity

This year, every edition of 1520’s Record Report will include a recommendation of an album, a movie or a video game that came out 20 years ago, in 2004, a year that is very close to our hearts and whose pop culture fundamentally shaped who we (and many other Millennials) are today.

Common & Pete rock - The Auditorium Vol. 1 (ALBUM)

This is it. This is the rap album I have been waiting on for a while now. Real food for the soul.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (TV Series)

An entertaining crime show with a twist that gave us whiplash.

2004 ‘TIL INFINITY: Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen (Video Game)

In 2004, Nintendo put out GBA remakes of the first generation of Pokemon games, and I fell in love with them all over again. To this day, these remakes are still the best way to experience those absolute classics. As my nephew put it recently: I’m gonna be a Pokemon Master until I die! Oh, and check out this very-00s commercial for the game.

One Love,
