This is the newest edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Reign Supreme (TV Show)
‘Reign Supreme’ (also known as ‘Le Monde De Demain’ in French) is a scripted Netflix show about the birth and rise of Hip Hop in France in the 80s and 90s, largely as seen through the eyes of two friends who would eventually be known as the legendary rap group Suprême NTM. It’s a true love letter to the era and its protagonists. We highly recommend it to anyone that likes good TV in general, but especially to people that, like us, grew up loving and identifying with European Hip Hop music and culture. The latter will find a lot to relate to here.
The trailer below has no English subtitles, but the show of course does. Also, you shouldn’t even need the trailer anyway. Just trust us on this one.
J.R.R. Tolkien - The Hobbit (Book)
You’re probably wondering where we keep finding this obscure, cutting edge stuff, but sadly a magician never reveals his secrets. All jokes aside, chances are you more or less know the story of Bilbo Baggins pretty well without ever having actually read the Fantasy classic ‘The Hobbit’. Because of this you might think that there is no need to. We’re here to tell you that you should pick it up anyway, because we just did, and it was a fun, nostalgic, comforting ride
Pro tip: listen to this on a loop while reading the beginning of the book.
Ryo Fukui - Scenery (Album)
Speaking of listening to music while reading: if you’re into that, we highly recommend this beautiful, lush Jazz record from 1976. Of course it is also great in any other setting. There’s after all a reason it is considered one of the (if not the) best Japanese Jazz albums of all time.
