Hey Young World,

This is the July 2024 edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.

We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.

2004 ‘til Infinity

This year, every edition of 1520’s Record Report will include a recommendation of an album, a movie or a video game that came out 20 years ago, in 2004, a year that is very close to our hearts and whose pop culture fundamentally shaped who we (and many other Millennials) are today.

Fabiana Palladino - Fabiana Palladino (Album)

Probably the best R&B album of the decade so far? Think late 80s and early 90s Janet Jackson, but still current. We can’t stop listening to it.

One Day (TV Series)

We’ve been listening to a lot of Britpop lately (Maike says it’s because I am in my 30s now). It therefore only makes sense that we also binged ‘One Day’, a must watch for anyone who sometimes misses the 90s, and especially for those who have a fondness for British popular culture from that era. Where are our Cool Britannia-heads at?!

2004 ‘Til Infinity: Beastie Boys - To the 5 Boroughs

Some fans and critics were somewhat disappointed by this album, because it was a more “traditional rap” record (for the Beastie Boys anyway). We always adored it. To this day, the song ‘Ch-Check It Out’ is the first song that comes to my mind when someone asks me what the theme song of my sitcom should be (your friends don’t ask you that?!?). R.I.P. MCA. We miss you.

One Love,

Marius | 1520
