Hey Young World,

This is the May 2024 edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.

We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.

2004 ‘til Infinity

This year, every edition of 1520’s Record Report will include a recommendation of an album, a movie or a video game that came out 20 years ago, in 2004, a year that is very close to our hearts and whose pop culture fundamentally shaped who we (and many other Millennials) are today.

Elea Bekkers & Christian Chamoun - xx, Lotte (ALbum)

One of the projects we’ve been working on during the last year is ‘xx, Lotte: die Leiden der jungen Charlotte’, the debut album of Christian Chamoun & Elea Bekkers. ‘xx, Lotte’ is a contemporary-romantic feminist reply to the role of women in classical literature, particularly to Goethe’s ‘Die Leiden des jungen Werther’. Charlotte, no longer a lifeless object of love, but a real person, finally shares her story.

The Prancing Pony Podcast (Podcast) & J.R.R. Tolkien - The Silmarillion (Novel)

As some readers might now, I - Marius - am a big fantasy fan. As such, I’m also a big Tolkien fan. I was however always too intimidated by ‘The Silmarillion’. Then I found this nice Tolkien podcast where they go through the book chapter by chapter, so I have started reading it and I’m really enjoying it. So, rather than recommending either by itself, I’m specifically recommending the combination.

2004 ‘TIL INFINITY: Masta ace - A Long Hot Summer

Much like Masta Ace, this album has always been a little overlooked. Much like Masta Ace, it is nevertheless brilliant. Just trust us.

One Love,

Marius | 1520
