This is the September 2023 edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Doja Cat - Scarlet (Album)
Doja Cat somehow managed to make an album that effortlessly combines her popstar swagger with, among other things, 90s underground rap sensibilities. Not that we ever doubted her. “Now y'all say y'all impressed, I'm the successor” - yes we are, and yes you are.
Various #HipHop50 Content
We’re still consuming all the great #HipHop50 content that is out there.
We recommend this episode of the Toure Show, in which three lifelong friends and fans talk about growing up with Hip Hop, as well as this episode of the same podcast, in which Toure and his guests Drew Dixon, a former A&R, Kathy Iandoli, an NYU professor, and Carri Twigg, who worked in the Obama White House and produced the great Netflix Hip Hop documentary Ladies First, talk about the past, present and future of Hip Hop from a female perspective.
Speaking of Ladies First, you should definitely check that out too. It’s a highly informative and entertaining documentary about the women of Hip Hop as well as the threads that connect them.
If after all that you still haven’t heard enough people talk about Hip Hop, you can listen to a recording of 1520’s Marius’ recent appearance on local radio, during which he shared some of his thoughts on Hip Hop’s 50th birthday.
