This is the new edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Widow’s Bay (TV Series)
Widow’s Bay is a wonderfully strange mix of small-town comedy and supernatural horror. Set on an isolated island off the coast of New England, it follows a struggling mayor trying to turn the place into a tourist destination, only for the island’s old stories and superstitions to start coming true. It’s funny, spooky and full of oddball characters, with a great sense of place.
Franny and Zooey - J. D. Salinger (Novel)
Franny and Zooey is a very Salinger kind of book: funny, uncomfortable, deeply conversational and almost entirely driven by its characters. Franny arrives home from college in a spiritual and emotional crisis, while the second half becomes an extended conversation between her and her brother Zooey. The Glass family can be almost unbearably precocious, but their endless talking is also what makes the book so compelling.
Dinosaur Jr. - There Near (Album)
The alternative rock legends are back with a collection of songs that are the perfect combination of catchy and rickety, with a whole bunch of great guitar solos on top. It’s an album that sounds like - and I mean this in the best way possible - it should be on CD.
