Hey Young World,

This is the July 2022 edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.

We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.

JYOCHO - Let’s Promise to Be Happy (Album)

If you feel like you are the kind of person that would enjoy a crossover of the emo and math rock band American Football and 70ss anime theme songs (we certainly are those types of people), then this album is for you. If that sounds too weird to you, give it a try anyway, because, in the end, it’s just beautiful, optimistic-sounding music.

Candice Carty-Williams - Queenie (Book)

This novel is about Queenie Jenkins, a 25-year-old Jamaican-British woman living in London, who, after a bad breakup, starts making questionable decisions in her quest for comfort. It’s a smart, sharp, funny, unsettling and, ultimately, hopeful read.

Heels (TV Series)

As big Arrow fans, we just had to check out Stephen Amell’s new show. We weren’t disappointed. Although some of the Green Arrow’s mannerisms definitely carried over, this show has nothing to do with super heroes. Instead, it is about real people going through real things. Oh, and small town wrestling. It actually reminds us a lot of Friday Night Lights, which is one of our all-time favorites.

One Love,

Marius | 1520
