Hey Young World,
This is the inaugural edition of 1520’s Record Report, our new series of (hopefully) monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Mieko Kawakami - Breasts And Eggs (Book)
Let me keep it simple: reading Breasts and Eggs by the Japanese author Mieko Kawakami felt like reading a Haruki Murakami novel written by a version of him that is just as gifted as writer as he is now, but also a couple of decades younger and a woman. If that sounds even better than reading an actual Murakami novel, then that’s because it might just be.
Will Smith - WILL (Book)
The eclectic female attractor rapper/actor opens all the way up. This is not just another sanitised superstar autobiography, but the raw, brutally honest and profoundly inspirational story of a generational icon. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook.
Abbott Elementary (TV Series)
Abbott Elementary is a new ABC mockumentary-style sitcom about a struggling public elementary school in Philadelphia and its dedicated teachers. Funny and moving at the same time, as the best sitcoms are. Watch the trailer:
Vado - Long Run, Vol. 2 & Nas - Magic (Albums)
Just two great New York rap records. I mean, just listen:
Unbelievable: A Ranking of Every Biggie Smalls Track (Article)
An unbelievable article ranking all songs by and with the greatest rapper of all time, on Passion of the Weiss, our modern equivalent of The Source.
One,
