This is the new edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Linda May Han Oh & Melissa Aldana — Beneath Lifted Skies (Album)
Beneath Lifted Skies is an intimate Jazz duo record by bassist Linda May Han Oh and saxophonist Melissa Aldana. Deeply rooted in Jazz tradition without being a throwback record, it moves between standards, bebop, improvisations and solo pieces. A beautiful record for every type of Jazz fan.
Willa Cather — My Ántonia (Novel)
My Ántonia is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read. Told through Jim Burden’s memories of his childhood on the Nebraska prairie, it’s a deeply nostalgic novel about friendship, immigration, landscape and the persistence of the past.
Teddy shouldn’t smoke — Tropische Zielen (Theater)
Tropische Zielen is a striking dance-theatre performance about history, identity, desire and the colonial past. Inspired by the parallel lives of Toto Koopman and Walter Spies, it brings together dance, text and live music. We’re working on the marketing for this production, so we’re admittedly not entirely impartial, but that also means we’ve had the pleasure of seeing this beautiful, layered piece come together up close.
