Hey Young World,
We took a month off, but now we’re back with the the September 2025 edition of 1520’s Record Report, our series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Haim - I Quit (Album)
Haim’s I Quit is catchy and full of easy confidence. The sisters blend their bright West Coast pop with smooth R&B influences, giving the occasional nod to classic Janet-era grooves. It’s record built for long drives open windows.
The Gilded Age (TV Series)
The Gilded Age is lush, sharp, and full of social intrigue. Set in 1880s New York, the series follows old-money families clashing with ambitious new arrivals, mixing lavish costumes with smart commentary on class and ambition. Perfect for fans of Downton Abbey .
Elif Batuman - The Idiot (Novel)
The Idiot is a smart, funny, and quietly meandering novel about first love, language, and finding your place in the world. Following Selin’s freshman year at Harvard in the mid-90s, Batuman captures the awkward brilliance of young adulthood: emails, inside jokes, and long conversations that feel both trivial and life-changing. It’s dry, observant, and sneakily moving.
One Love,
