Hey Young World,
This is fourth edition of 1520’s Record Report, our new series of monthly articles in which we recommend things we’re currently into.
We’ve picked the name Record Report in honor of Hip Hop magazine The Source, which’s album review section went under that name and, when we were growing up, told us what was worth copping and what wasn’t. In our own small way, we hope to do the same.
Vince Staples - Ramona Park Broke My Heart (Album)
Vince Staples is back with a smooth new record. We recommend listening to it while taking a drive.
Kamp & Fid Mella - 2URÜCK OHNE 2UKUNFT (Album)
The Austrian slacker-rapper Kamp - one of the best rappers alive, believe it or not - is back with his second album after more than a decade. This one is for all those of us who’s lives didn’t turn out the way we thought they would, but who are still cool as fuck anyway.
Tokyo Vice (TV Show)
Tokyo Vice is an authentically billingual TV show about an American rookie journalist who’s going after the Yakuza in Tokyo. It’s a thrilling watch.
Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off (Documentary)
Those who know us know that we have been heavily influenced by sub- and countercultures. Skateboarding culture was one of them. Not just because it was ubiquitous when we were growing up, or because the aesthetics have appealed to us (and still do), but also because of its genuine DIY ethos. We therefore weren’t gonna miss this documentary, which turned out to not only be a brutally honest carer overview of one of skateboarding’s most important figures, but also a tender love letter to a culture that - against all odds - has survived, and thrived, long enough for it and its icons to become - well - old, right before our eyes. We highly recommend it.
One Love,
